Every student being impels from his or her inner body, a type of electromagnetic force. This force is referred to as your “Ki” or center of energy. In Chinese, the word for vital force is “Chi” and in Japanese, Aikido (Martial Art Form), means “The way of gathering vital force”.
Each student needs to understand that your “Ki” is not a theory but a true inner force. Subsequently, it is an actual physical force, which you can learn to control and put to use in self-defense situations. The foundation and principle of the utilization of this “Ki”, is the ability to center the mind on one’s technique, rather than on fear. As previously discussed, fear is the mind killer, for it paralyzes your ability to react. Therefore, it is only when you truly become immersed in performance of a given technique, that a student can overcome fear. At this point, the student will think of nothing but focusing and executing one’s technique while automatically unleashing your inner “Ki”, without fear.
This is one of the reasons why we constantly practice and train on each and every technique. It is when you are totally immersed and passionate into your technique that you think of nothing else when performing your technique. Then when the need arises to protect yourself, you are ready and confident. However, in order to get to this point, you must practice all techniques with many, many repetitions. Since every real self-defense situation is an unrehearsed opportunity to become free of fear, these constant repetitions will properly prepare you to seize and take on these opportunities.
When you perform countless repetitions of any given technique, the technique performed becomes a permanent part of your body. A technique learned in this way, will never leave you. It will always be there for you when the need arises. It will always present itself and be executed in a smooth and successful manner, without conscious thought, whenever conditions are warranted. If we practice calm, forceful and skillful repetitions for each technique, with the consciousness thought that the universal vital force flows through our hands, arms and legs; we will always execute our techniques with continued success.
