The Korean Flag represents much of the thought, philosophy and spirituality of the Orient. The symbol and sometimes the flag itself, is called Tae Kuk.

Portrayed on the flag is a circle divided equally and in perfect balance. The Upper (Red) section represents the Yang and the Lower (Blue) section represents the Um. The Um and Yang together are an ancient symbol of the universe. They express the opposing idealism of the universe, which is: Fire and Water; Day and Night; Dark and Light; Construction and Destruction; Masculine and Feminine; Active and Passive; Heat and Cold; Plus and Minus and so on.

The Three Bars at each corner also communicate the concept of opportunities and balance. The Three Unbroken Lines stand for Heaven; the opposite Three Broken Lines represent the Earth and the Two lines with a broken line between, symbolizes Fire, while the lines at the corner represents the symbol of water.

The central thought in Tae Kuk is that Balance and Harmony is always maintained in all the continuous changes constantly occurring in our endless Universe.
